Basement areas are seldom finished when the house is initially constructed, and there is good reason: foundation wall leaks are one of two of the most common complaints with new homes. Yet a finished basement adds tremendous amount of floor area to a home, so we recommend waiting two years after initial construction to assess if any leaks develop, then finish as desired.
Many people pursue a theatre experience by installing “big screen” televisions with a quality sound system in their basements. The large area is perfect for creating an entertainment area, which can be further enhanced by adding a gas fireplace, and quality furnishings (floor, wall, and ceiling).
Families with young children may want a finished area for the young ones to play, separate from the upstairs. Then cleanup after playtime is not as crucial.
Basement bedrooms for teenagers and/or overnight guests, a finished washroom, and kitchens are also desired.
When we look at unfinished basements we take specific measurements of the entire area, and listen to the prospective customer’s desired use of the area. We then prepare a plan of action using computer assisted design to present a layout of the basement transformed.
As with most renovation projects, the cost to renovate varies with choice of materials, and the extent of change to the area.
