We recommend using pressure treated material for deck substructures (posts, beams, and joists) to ensure the structure will last for many years.  Fence posts should also be pressure treated. 

Deck surface and railings can be constructed with many different materials, each having distinct advantages and price levels.  Even fencing has these options (such as pressure treated, cedar, aluminum, and plastic composite).
